Leadership: my frustrations part 1

My problem with the leadership thing…

First of all I should probably mention that I am well aware this shouldn’t be the reality, and it isn’t true across the board.  However, this post is based on my 10 year experience of Christian ministry…

The amount of focus being put forth to becoming a “great leader” is in inverted proportion to kindness and gentleness.

In other words, the more interested in being a good leader a person is, the more likely they are going to be kind of a jerk.

The worst part is that these guys aren’t jerks (most of the time).  Guys who began in ministry b/c they loved serving God and His church all of a sudden turn into CEO’s spending more time in leadership meetings than in prayer; more time evaluating their staff than serving them; and more time looking for ways to improve their ministry than taking time to celebrate what God is already doing.

Now, I think evaluations can be valuable and I think that ministries should constantly seek to improve.  However, most people on our staffs haven’t yet become jaded by shine of leadership improvement and will respond poorly to their PASTORS evaluating them having never served them (or with them); and critiquing ministries they have never celebrated.

I totally believe that I have lost at least one person on my staff b/c I wasn’t mature enough to serve and celebrate.  Instead, in a naive desire to improve, I evaluated and critiqued my way into having to replace a man God had provided.

The worst part is that I was totally on the other end at one time.  I learned from my own experience that most people, if forced to choose, will take a pastor over a leader any day.

- I bought a new Idea Book today.  It’s been a couple of months since I have really carried one around with me so I am a little idea constipated, but this should really help loosen things up.

- Training for the Triathalon is going well.  I rode 4 miles today and ran 1 and a half.  The run is the hard part for me.

- Rockets killed Portland in game one (in Portland).  If they take game 2 tomorrow the series should be over, but they find brilliant ways to fall apart.

- I totally believe Houston can take down the Lakers if they make it to them.

- We have had quite a few visitors in the last couple of weeks for church.  I’m excited for summertime!

- 2 weeks until Kristan and I are going on a cruise.  Can’t wait!

- Jeff Chauncey will be speaking that Sunday (May 10th).  Should be great.

MAN

I’m not much of a manual labor type guy.  Sweating out in the Sun while I hoe the ground isn’t my idea of a good time.  Helping a friend surprise his wife, however, is something I can dig (see what I did there?).  So, that’s exactly what I did this afternoon.  I put my message on hold, picked up a spade (seriously, when Hal told me to go grab it I just guessed right…I had no idea what a spade was), and dug some trenches in his backyard.

We did guy stuff:  Man work – Man talk (beer and women – our wives – both came up) – and Man sweat.

It was fun & thanks to Direct TV I didn’t even have to miss the overtime of Boston/Chicago.

The best part:  I am getting ready to fire up the grill to cook some steaks.  I feel like so much of a man right now I wish I could hop on a horse and cattle drive my dinner straight up through Reedy Fork to my grill.

Confessions of a Leadership Heretic

For the last two weeks an online application to a leadership network put together by one of the premier guys has sat open on my desktop.  I’m sure there are hundreds of pastors turning in applications to be a part of this.  The best part is that I know a couple of guys who could put in a good word for me with this dude.

I deleted the application today.

I just don’t want to do it.  No doubt about it, I would have a great time.  I would learn a ton.  I would make many great connections with some innovative pastors.

Maybe I am being naive…or arrogant, but there is something about all this leadership stuff that I am growing tired of.  The most unfortunate thing about it is that there is no good argument for not constantly participating in these “leadership growth” type things.  I’m not foolish enough to think I have arrived, or that it’s not relevant to our situation, or that b/c our church is small I don’t need to be a good leader.  I won’t even make the “I’m a pastor not a leader” argument.

If that network called me tomorrow with a personal invitation and a waived fee I would politely decline…and I feel like I need a good reason for that.  Right now I don’t have one (at least one I can put into words)

So, stay tuned, I plan on exploring that on here in the coming weeks.

This blog and all the rest I have gotten the last day is dedicated to Kim B

I want to thank all of you who have been following the going ons of Nolan the last week.  Your prayers (if you have been praying) have been much appreciated.

To catch you all up: Nolan woke up Monday morning at 2:30 am and didn’t go back to sleep.  Although he was clearly tired he would stand in his crib and scream every time we tried to put him down.  He finally fell asleep at 7:30 Monday evening.  Then, it happened again Tuesday in the early am.  It had become very emotionally and physically taxing on me and Kristan.

We had gotten to the point where we wished Nolan had a fever or some other signs of illness.  His only symptoms were not sleeping and crying.  Then, a big godsend in the form of our friend Kim, tipped me off the possibility of an ear infection.  I googled the symptoms and some he had and some he didn’t.

We scheduled an appt. with the doctor and sure enough that was what’s going on.  So, Nolan is on omoxy…amox….medication.  Now I am just hoping he’s not allergic.

Free Cruise

April 9, 2009 at 12:44 pm | In Misc | 2 Comments

Kristan and I are going on a cruise!  About 3 months ago I got an email from a friend with an unbelievable opportunity – a FREE cruise for pastors.  Kristan and I talked about it and decided to do it, but then I forgot to contact the people for the last several months.  I thought for sure we missed the boat (rimshot)

Anyway, at community dinner last Tuesday someone brought it up.  When I told the group I had forgotten to register they all made fun of me…so I quickly looked up the contacts phone number and left a message.  She called me yesterday and said that there was literally ONE available cabin left.  Sweet!

So, May 4 – 8 Kris and I will be setting sail for the Caribbean on “The Monarch of the Seas”.   The savings we got on this thing was over 2000$!

Thank Tom!

Nolan and Joe’s Bromance

April 8, 2009 at 4:33 pm | In Parenting | 1 Comment

My son loves Joe.  If you don’t know Joe than this post is really kind of irrelevant to you, but if you do, you probably love Joe too and totally understand my son’s infatuation.  Last weekend after church Joe was riding with the Reeve clan…in the backseat next to Nolan.  They played the whole ride home, and built such a strong friendship in that 15 minutes that when Joe exited the car Nolan started screaming and crying.  Tears were streaming down his face and he stretched his arm out towards Joe’s house.  It was cute and sad and made me a little jealous.

Then yesterday, Nolan found Joe and Jennifer’s wedding announcement magnet on our refrigerator and pointed at Joe’s picture and started yelling again.  Wow.

So, I am jealous for my son’s love.  I want it all.

Easter Egg Hunt and connecting to our community

April 6, 2009 at 3:59 pm | In Chuch Planting, Community | Leave a Comment

This is going to be a fun weekend.   The partnership that The Patio enjoys with Reedy Fork Ranch has really developed into something special recently.  One of the greatest benefits is our ability to work with the neighborhood to throw some great parties and events!  This upcoming Saturday is the annual RFR Easter Egg Hunt.

Yesterday a few of us walked the area and mapped out exactly how we were going to set everything up, and I am so excited about this thing!  The kids are going to have a blast.

We have been around in the neighborhood for almost 3 years now.  During that time we have really zeroed in on building bridges with the community and developing the type of trust and relationship that chuches should have with the areas around them.

The prayer and hope of The Patio is that the residents of Reedy Fork Ranch would care if we were gone tomorrow…even if they NEVER set foot into one of our worship gatherings.  I am more confident than ever that we are seeing that prayer answered!
