Our Lobster

Halloween in Reedy Fork is INSANE!  There were so many kids.  Seriously, I bet people were driving in from way out to come trick or treat here.  I don’t care, it was a lot of fun.  Kristan and I sat on the porch and handed out candy while holding our giant lobster.  We felt kinda stingy handing out only one piece of candy at a time (I used to hate people like that as a kid), but 150 pieces of candy were gone so fast that I’m glad we stuck to our guns.

The best costume of the night was a girl who dressed up like an ipod.  One of a kind.  The most overdone costume was the villian from the Scream movies.  What year are we in again?  Oh well, its a fun mask I guess.

Anyway here is a parting shot of our lobster.  He was ecstatic to get some naked time after wearing that heavy costume for a couple of hours.

Rockets 95, Lakers 93

October 31, 2007 at 2:08 am | In Check it out | Leave a Comment

Big win tonight over the lakers to start the season off right!  Thanks Kekic family for letting me watch the game at your house.  There are something like 7 Rockets games on a season so it was great to see it.  Here are some thoughts I have now that its over -

~ Rockets are a lot more fun to watch with Adelman as the coach.
~ Kobe is sick!  That guy scores 40 or 50 against the Rockets every time.
~ Kobe is also a whiner!  I’ve never seen someone cry so much every time a call doesn’t go their way.
~ Yao is the BEST center in the NBA.
~ Yao sucks at winning jump balls – I’ve never seen him get the opening tip.  You are 7′6″ Yao!  Get the ball!
~ I would need an accountability partner to watch me if I saw a lot of Rockets games…Jason saw a new side of me.
~ Rafer Alston needs super glue on his hands to keep him from shooting the ball every time he touches it.
~ Yao needs super glue to keep him from turning it over every time he touches it.
~ Luke Walton is only slightly less annoying than his father.
~ Bonzi is back…and I am happy.
~ Shane Battier is my 2nd favorite Rocket.  He is the reason we won tonight.

If anyone has an NBA package and wants company for Rockets games let me know!  I love this game!

Relay for Community

Last Saturday I laced up my shoes, did some basic stretches, and ran.  It was like 9pm and kind of cold, but I took off out my door determined to run until my body quit on me.

3 miles.  40 minutes.  An incredible amount of physical pain.

See, I was inspired by Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians that we should “run in such a way that we might win the race”.  He goes onto to emphasize the importance of preparation rather than running aimlessly or without purpose.

For the last year or so I don’t think I’ve run for exercise once.  I certainly don’t eat like a runner.  And the idea of long-distance running appeals to me about as much as becoming a vegan.  In short, I was totally unprepared to run 3 miles.  At least I beat the projections!  One guy in my church though I only would make it 2 blocks!  Ouch.

“I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that after I have preached to others I might not become disqualified”
- Paul (1 Co. 9:27)

In ministry it’s real easy to get so focused on leading, teaching, creating, and developing the church that personal spiritual health is neglected.  In the race of the faith that we are running together (think “relay” rather than individual competition) I am no good long-term if all I do is train others for the race, but fail to prepare myself.

Focus on the positives

Tomorrow I am driving down to Charlotte to pick up some worship equipment donated to us by a guy that I went to seminary with.  This guy is helping us out big time and man am I thankful!

It’s really easy to dwell on the one or two sources of negative criticism in ministry (everyone has one or two…at least) and forget all the praiseworthy stuff going on -

We have some really great supporters here at The Patio.
We have some new faces around recently which really brings a great level of excitement.
EVERYONE in our church is a giver!  Seriously now, how many churches can say that?
We have a clear vision from God…we know where we are going – that’s pretty huge!
Jason and Stephanie are insanely good at what they do.
We have a great relationship with the community and the developers.  There are a lot of open doors b/c of it.

I could go on and on.  You could too!  You should by the way.  It’s a lot more spiritually benificial than focusing on the little bit of negative stuff that we deal with from time to time.

November 11th, new meeting location!

Let me just say that Starmount ROCKS!  They seriously have our backs and just stepped up big time to help out The Patio even more.

This is the company that handles reservations for the community center in Reedy Fork Ranch.  Unfortunately, due to policy and the amount of people in the Ranch we can’t reserve the community center weekly for our Sunday morning gathering.  However, thanks to God smacking us over the head with an idea, and to the graciousness of Starmount; they are going to allow us to use their information center on Sunday mornings!

It actually can hold more people than the community center, has better acoustics, looks nicer, and is in a more prominent location!

This is still a temporary fix as we are praying for God to work out something after we launch, but we were getting “snug” in the house.

Album of the Year front-runner

October 28, 2007 at 12:17 am | In Check it out | 1 Comment

Every May I announce my “album of the year”.  It doesn’t necessarily have to be a 2007-2008 release.  It just has to be new to me.  This year there is already a clear front-runner.  It is going to be tough for anyone to catch her.

Ingrid Michaelson: “Girls and Boys”

Normally anyone who I hear of for the first time off of an Old Navy commercial wouldn’t stand a chance, but this album is absolutely amazing!  This could be the first time in my 15 years of doing “Album of the Year” that a female artist takes home the prize.

Im sure Ingrid will be thrilled

Rolling over

Nolan rolled over this week.  I put him on his back and left the room for a minute and when I came back he was face-down eating the blanket.  The next day I actually caught him rolling from his front to his back.

It’s pretty exciting…and a little scary.

I can only imagine what it’s like for him.  The only thing I can relate it to is the trust fall thing that people do at camps and team building events, just without the people behind you.  I choose to believe that Nolan has a tremendous amount of courage to try something he has never done (rather than believe that it’s purely by accident).

The fun thing about having a 4 month old is how incredibly similar his life is to the young life of a church plant.  So much is new.  There is a lot of struggling through things that later on will be so easy we don’t even think about it (did it take you 15 minutes to roll out of bed this morning…actually, nevermind).

Its fun to watch our little metaphor grow up.

Team

Maybe I will dedicate Wed. evenings to celebrate our leadership meetings.  Jason and Stephanie are so great!  There is a lot of stuff I am thankful for with church planting, but somewhere near the top of the list is the opportunity to work with such a great team.

I have a couple of thoughts on teams:
1.  Chemistry might be the most important thing.  I can deal with a little immaturity.  We can develop in places that are weak.  Chemistry, however, is nearly impossible to force.  I have never been on a team where I felt like the the rest of the group were my friends.
2.  You should know that they have your back.
3.  You should have a lot of fun together.

Those are just some personal thoughts that emerge out of the team I am a part of.  Thanks Jason and Stephanie for making ministry so much fun!

We can make as many copies as we want

The Patio is a proud owner of a brand new (to us) copier!  Last week I was contacted by a pastor, David Bailey who hooked us up big time.  As Jason, Mladen and I unloaded this thing there was an overwhelming feeling of credibility.

That should last until Jason hops up and makes photocopies of his butt.  I give him a week before he can’t resist the urge anymore.

It’s not what you know

I spoke with a woman today who works for Starmount and we are invited as a church to help out with their annual Christmas party!  This is a huge opportunity.  She told me that they had 200 people come through last year and they expect more this year.  They are going to put us in the Christmas newsletter and let us give out information at the party.

The best thing about this whole deal is that we are cultivating a GREAT relationship with Starmount (the company developing Reedy Fork) and with the community!  This woman, Lindy, is so helpful.

I am thrilled about this opportunity to serve Reedy Fork!  It comes at the best possible time (a couple of weeks before our first preview service) for us to promote our launch.

It’s just the tip of the iceberg of what God is doing right now!
