Cookout Tonight
May 31, 2007 at 3:52 pm | In Chuch Planting | 1 CommentTonight is our first mid-week gathering as a launch team! It is such a joy to be having a cookout and game night and completely know that this is church! As a community of believers united by our God for a common purpose we are going to be chowing down on some of the most mouth-watering hamburgers ever grilled (if I do say so myself) and enjoying some tooth and nail competition. I love it!
My favorite thing about church planting is how everything has new life in it. I mean, its a cookout right? But for me, its the most spiritual thing I can think of doing tonight!
If you are free tonight feel free to come on out to my place (mapquest 4101 pepperbush drive, greensboro 27405). Just bring chips or a drink.
Later!
Perfect Churches
May 30, 2007 at 11:35 pm | In Misc | Leave a CommentSo after a six month hiatus I have returned to the wonderful world of instant messenger (caritasinf). I really don’t understand why anyone emails anymore. Some of my best conversations in ministry have happened through this medium. I think it has something to do with not having to say something to someone’s face.
Anyway, last night I was bombarded by all the old friends who had gone so long without hearing the ”creak” of my screenname upon signing on. Just like the old days hours passed as I was frantically clicking from one friend to another. One in particular had really been going through some major life changes. New passion, new click of friends, new church – all cool stuff.
As he told me how much he loved the church he was attending I realized how thankful I am that I’ve never had to go through the process of choosing a church. I guess it would be kind of fun coming up with an evaluation sheet and grading different churches on their music styles and attractiveness of greeters, but really I could just steal one from the church members (so many of them are doing the same thing already).
The bottom line is that every church has an ugly greeter or bad acoustics. Maybe its a goofy smile or a stupid looking gotee, but every head pastor has something quirky about him. Sometimes its a major annoyance like meeting in a school or a house.
We all know there aren’t any perfect churches out there. The ones who try to sell themselves as perfect are LYING to you. Its not an accident either. They know how screwed up they are, they just arent telling you.
The Patio Online
May 30, 2007 at 2:35 am | In Chuch Planting | Leave a CommentI love church website hunting! In the past year I have probably spent hundreds of hours digging through the crap trying to find the truly great ones. There are places to go that could tell you systematically what makes a good site. I just know what appeals to me. Give me 3 seconds with your church website and I can tell you if I will ever come back. Obviously, when people go online looking for The Patio they need to see something special. In the 21st century it matters…bottom line.
Why do I bring it up? Because today I saw the “rough draft” of our website. I was concerned that I might be a little biased (no one believes their baby is ugly, right?) so I showed the site to one person today unaffiliated with all things “Coming Alive”. His response was, “That rough draft is better than any church website I have ever seen, and 9360013287 times better than my churches website.”
I’ve seen some great church websites. My standard is really high, but I have to give major credit to Lauren. She did a great job with our logo, and she is going to blow you all away with this website. Send her your love guys!
And if you are a church planter and you stumbled onto this blog somehow you need to get in touch with her. I’ve worked with her for 4 years now and I have never been let down. Here is her website.
What if’s
May 29, 2007 at 3:41 pm | In Chuch Planting | 3 CommentsI think one of the biggest challenges for church planters is keeping your Crash (a group of Rhino’s running together) all focused on the preferred future. I’ve seen how quickly things deteriorate when the vision or the passion gets lost. I feel like I am constantly talking about our vision, but I know that the day I stop is the day everyone forgets where we are going.
We all (church planters) want passionate people. There are those coveted few out there in the world that believe with all their heart they are going to be used to impact the course of the Kingdom. I love these people! They don’t need to be micro-managed, they rarely complain about trivial things, and, if you believe with them, you just might get to see something really amazing!
The problem is that the passionate can sometimes be so focused on tomorrow that they miss out on today.
I think one of the other main distractions for all believers committed to doing something great is the abundance of opportunity. This point will resonate more with some than others. As I was having lunch with a friend of mine today I realized he is in a place that is really common for Christians.
His journey has come to a point of decision. The two roads diverging in a yellow wood. The difference for Frost was to take the less traveled one. The decision, however, is rarely the problem for us when we are in that circumstance. The problem is the commitment to the decision. This is when the “what if’s” begin to haunt us.
“What if I made the wrong decision?”
“What if I fail?”
“What if God is calling me overseas?”
“What if there was something better out there?”
“What if…?”
I like what Yogi Berra says, “When you come to a fork in the road…TAKE IT!”
Our temptation when faced with decision is to try to keep our options open. Kristan and I had a conversation just two weeks ago about the reality that we had essentially leapt off the cliff now. There is no going back. No choosing to stay a youth pastor forever and forget about this whole church planting thing. Although I never would have made that decision anyway, its a different world when you make that 100% commitment to leap. Its freeing. Scary, but freeing.
From here on out I am going to be so passionate about The Patio vision and future that the “what if’s” are irrelevant.

This Thursday
May 28, 2007 at 4:06 pm | In Chuch Planting | 2 CommentsToday I came across a recipe for hamburgers that I can’t wait to try out! Normally I am not into any type of cooking, but last weekend Randy Digh’s ribs knocked something loose inside my very core. I will cook and it will be glorious! There will be rejoicing in the streets! And those of you who have the pleasure of experiencing it will never darken the doorway of McDonalds again.
This wonderful day of burger eating will be this Thursday at 630 pm. It is primarily for our core group, but if you would like to come and spend some time with The Patio community and experience the savory treat which will be revealed feel free to show up. Email me for directions – caritasinf@hotmail.com
Pool Opening
May 27, 2007 at 1:23 am | In Chuch Planting | 2 CommentsSummertime is the best time for a community church planter! Our vision statement is to become, “a community of people coming alive through authentic relationships“. Usually I highlight the “coming alive” part as the slogan for our vision, but without relationships the whole ship sinks.
What does this have to do with summertime? Everything! In the winter you can go a week without seeing anyone, but in the summer everybody is outside walking or, better yet, at the pool. I have joked that my office between Memorial Day and Labor Day is complete with a horseshoe pit and a water basketball goal! In the past couple of trips to the pool I have met so many people. By the way, nothing builds relationship with guys than dunking on them in a friendly game of 21 in the pool.
This is really what Christianity lived out in community should be – being around people nonstop! Its going to be great!
5 worst movies of 2006-2007
May 26, 2007 at 2:34 am | In Movies | 1 CommentIn the past year I have seen some terrible movies! A late entry to the field of potential losers was what I saw tonight, Premonition (with Sandra Bullock). I hate when movies use freaky kids to scare me. Anyway, the 5 worst are decided by a combonation of how bad it actually was coupled with my expectations. If you disagree then feel free to leave your own 5 worst as a comment.
5. Babel – Do not promise me Crash if all I get is Brad Pitt complaining for 3 hours that no one understands English.
4. Apocalypto – The last 45 minutes were good. The rest was just ok. I expected a lot.
3. Talledega Nights – I wish I would have saved my 8 bucks and been content with what I saw in the previews for it…those were the only funny parts anyway.
2. The Good Shepherd – I gave up on it and cut it off. That says a lot.
1. Ghost Rider – I loved how Ghost Rider destroys millions of dollars worth of property with his flaming bike of terror in pursuit of a purse snatcher. Maybe its my fault for looking forward to this movie.
There were worse movies this past year (John Tucker must Die, The Marine, The Protector) but I didnt expect anything out of them so they didnt make the list. Just so you know, Spider Man 3 really flirted with making it, but there was some good symbolism at parts that redeemed it to “just ok”
The future aint what it used to be
May 25, 2007 at 2:06 am | In Chuch Planting | 2 CommentsIf you have had the luck (good or bad depending on who you are) to run into me this week I have probably talked your ear off about all that God is doing at The Patio. Most of you seem to get excited with me, but some of you have a look on your face like I just told you I pee sitting down. Seriously if you don’t like it you may just want to avoid me for a couple of weeks because it doesnt look like I’m going to stop for a while!
There are so many amazing stories that God is writing in our community right now that I can’t even begin to unpack them all for you. Some of them are out there on other people’s blogs, and others are private for the time being. The good news is that no matter what, even if some of these stories don’t end the way I want them to, I can rest in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, “The future ain’t what it used to be”
~ For the record, I pee standing up
Top Ten Movies of 2006-2007
May 24, 2007 at 2:57 pm | In Movies | 3 CommentsI love movies. It is art for our generation. I have decided in the spirit of my “album of the year” tradition to give an annual list of my best and worst movies. The movies are decided solely on how well they lived up to expectations for me. Is it subjective? Absolutely, but its my list so there’s nothing anyone can do about it…
10. Blood Diamond – Djmon Honsou was great. If you have never seen Amistad go rent it right now! Don’t read the rest, just grab your keys, go to blockbuster and pick it up.
9. Lady in the Water – I know it wasn’t popular, but the whole idea was realizing your role in a larger story and coming alive by embracing it. Mad props to Shylamon for supporting the vision of The Patio!
8. Deja Vu
7. Blades of Glory – I don’t like either of the two main actors, but together…so funny!
6. The Gaurdian – This movie is the same premise of the Caedmon’s Call song The Truth which asks the question, “are you going to save yourself or go back for the others?” How you answer this question defines you as a Christian, and as a human.
5. 300 - Not the best movie since Braveheart, as some people thought, but its a great guys movie none the less.
4. Unknown – A bunch of guys wake up in a warehouse with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Reminded me of The Usual Suspects (go to blockbuster right now!).
3. The Illusionist
2. Freedom Writers – This movie will inspire passion in you like no other!
1. Stranger than Fiction – One of the best pictures of the Gospel I have ever seen in film. Near the end of the film when Ferrell’s character is aware that the author of his life has written his death he says to her, “It has to be this way, it’s the perfect ending”. This is perfectly parrallel to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene crying out to the Father that His will be done. The sacrifice (of both Jesus and Ferrell’s character) was part of a beautiful story that had to happen. Amazing movie!
Stay tuned for top 5 worst movies of 2006-2007. I promise some of you will be mad!
My prayer
May 22, 2007 at 11:05 pm | In Chuch Planting | 2 Comments3 days ago Kristan and I were praying for The Patio and I said something like this to God: “So far, you have really been good to us. I recognize that we are blessed beyond what we deserve. However, everything you have done has been something I have already imagined you doing. Although I thank you and praise you for these things, I know you want to blow my mind…I beg you to do it!”
This evening I thanked God for answering that prayer. Since Sunday morning it has felt like God took that prayer as a personal challenge and has responded in a way that I have never before seen in my ministry.
I can’t tell you how much I want to go into detail right now, but I can’t just yet. All I can say is stay posted! The next few weeks are going to be off the charts amazing!
